When pain occurs it is showing you that somewhere in your body a problem has surfaced, it is our alarm system. People shrug pain off everyday thinking it will work its way out, but that may not be the case. Most people assume that if they are not in any pain, they are healthy. This is not the case. Pain is usually the last symptom to arrive and the first symptom to leave during the coarse of treatment. Most patients will experience both acute and chronic pain during the coarse of their lives. It is important to understand the difference between the two so you can make informed decisions about treatment.
There are two types of pain:
1. Acute Pain- This pain is new to the body and can be caused by a sprain, cut, broken bone etc. It may also serve as a warning of disease or a threat to the body. Acute pain may be mild and last for just a moment, or it may be severe and last for weeks or months. In most cases, acute pain subsides when the damaged tissue heals. Unrelieved or untreated acute pain, however, may lead to chronic pain.
2. Chronic Pain- Chronic pain persists despite the fact the the injuried tissue has healed and may last up to six months or more. Physical effects include tense muscles, decreased mobility, lack of energy, or changes in appetite. Emotional effects include depression, anger, anxiety, and/or fear of re-injury. The most common chronic pain complaints include headaches, low back pain, arthritis pain and cancer pain Many look to painkillers to alienate the symptoms, this seems like the right thing to do, after all no one wants to live in the discomfort of pain. Quite often painkillers will mask the cause of the problem by reducing the amount of pain. Doesn’t it make more sense to find the true cause of the pain and treat it directly?
It is important for you to address your pain as there may be a serious underlying cause as to why it has developed. You might need to seek professional help to correct and maintain the problem.
